Journal Entry 7-1-10

This is where Lily must be strong for Rosaleen, which is a sort of reversal of roles. Rosaleen has stood up for Lily in the past against T.Ray, and now Lily must stand up for Rosaleen against the men that beat her up. Rosaleen did show great strength of character and conviction, since she was beat up by a group of men, yet she didn’t break and give an apology. While this is strong, it goes against the human want to survive, and so strengthens her cause all the more. Rosaleen is proud of herself for not giving in to her persecutors.
For Lily, she was mad at the men that beat up Rosaleen, but she was also mad at Rosaleen for egging the men on by not apologizing. This anger and the anger she has for T.Ray and everything he has put her through over the years strengthens Lily’s resolve to get the two of them out of the hospital and away from the town. It drives her to do something she never thought she would, breaking someone out of jail and running away from everything she knows.
